Happy Father's Day - Timeline

One day a year we honor our Fathers and their involvement in their children's lives, and now more than ever before Fathers are actually so much more involved than before this holiday became an actual holiday! In the early 1900's Fathers, depending on their profession, left most child rearing duties to the Mother and you might have heard these words from the Father ~ children are to be seen, and not heard!

In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, organized the first Father's Day celebration on June 19,  for her own father's birthday. The mayor of Spokane and the governor of Washington state officially support the event.
Dodd's father, a farmer and Civil War veteran, had been a single father to six young children after the death of his wife!

Then in 1924 Calvin Coolidge publicly show support for a National Father's Day.
And in 1926 National Father's Day Committee meets for the first time in New York City
Fast forward to 1956 ~ the observance of Father's Day is recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress and in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson proclaims Father's Day to be an official national holiday. The reason that the date varies from year to year is that in 1972 President Richard Nixon signs into law that a permanent U.S. Father's Day to
be observed on the third Sunday in June.
Check out this link ~  http://www.infoplease.com/spot/fathersdayhist.html#ixzz1PkKcpIWc   ~ to see how Fathers have evolved in the rearing of children now! I like to think that there is a good woman behind every good Father, but as you can see
by Mr Dodd's life it's not always true.

His story reminds me of my father. I only wish he were still living so that I could tell him on a daily basis what he has meant to me and how much I truly love him. He taught me about love, humility, and how to turn the other cheek. He was a kind and giving man and I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He gave up a part of himself to keep our family together.  Because of him, I am a better person!
I love and miss you Daddy!

  2. My daddy left this earthly world in '98, but not before he left footprints that I continue to follow every day.
I join you in singing the praise of fathers everywhere who do so much more than just bring home the bacon.
